Man jailed for copyright infringement and tax evasion, his cryptocurrency confiscated

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday that Talon White of Newport, Oregon, has been sentenced to federal prison for “illegal video streaming and website downloads.”

The DOJ further reported that the 31-year-old “created websites to illegally distribute thousands of copyright-protected movies and television shows and to evade taxes on the profits of his illegal endeavor.”

The case began when investigators learned of several illegal websites linked to White in October 2013 that allow paid subscribers to stream and download copyright-protected content. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) later in 2014 called for an end to the White conflict and to stop their illegal activity but they ignored the demand.

The Justice Department said that White shifted his operations from one website to another over the next four years to avoid detection, adding that he had accumulated millions of dollars in membership fees from their websites as of 2018.

The DOJ elaborated that in November 2018 investigators issued search and seizure warrants at his home in Newport and several bank accounts:

Agents confiscated $3.9 million from his accounts, $35,000 in cash and over $1 million in cryptocurrency.

In addition, the Justice Department noted that White “filed false personal income tax returns, underestimating his income by more than $4.4 million and causing a tax loss to the IRS of more than $1.7 million.”

The announcement said White was sentenced to “12 months and one day in federal prison and three years of supervised release”. He was charged with copyright infringement and tax evasion on November 1, 2019; He pleaded guilty to both the charges on November 25, 2019.

The DOJ further elaborated:

US District Court Judge Ann L. Aiken ordered White to pay more than $4.3 million in restitution to the MPAA and the IRS. White would also have to forfeit all US currency and cryptocurrency that was confiscated from his bank accounts, in addition to the amount his Newport house was purchased with the proceeds of his plan.
