Ongoing Efforts to Free Ross – Ulbricht’s clemency petition closes at half a million signatures – Bitcoin News

Near the end of 2021, Ross Ulbricht remains in prison as he is serving his harsh double-life prison sentence for creating a website called Silk Road. Ever since he was arrested, efforts to free Ulbricht have continued, as a large number of individuals and a large swath of prestigious organizations believe that his sentence was unjust and the Silk Road court case was brought to justice. Had a complete abortion.

Ross Ulbricht’s Change.org clemency petition nears 500K signatures, Georgetown law professor: ‘Sentence was too excessive’

Ulbricht has been regularly updating the public about his well-being over the past 12 months, and last summer he spoke publicly for the first time since 2013. Today, Ulbricht’s clemency petition is closing in on half a million signatures and the effort is only 51,014 signatures away from reaching the 500K signature target.

Ross Ulbricht is still serving his double life prison sentence for creating the Silk Road website and his family and close friends are still doubling down to set him free. Ulbricht, 37, was arrested in 2013 and pleaded guilty to several nonviolent criminal charges in February 2015.

In May 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to a double life sentence and forty years without the possibility of parole. Following his conviction, a large number of individuals and organizations criticized the US government and Ulbricht’s judge for handing over such a harsh sentence. In a statement featured on the web portal freeross.org, Georgetown University law professor Sean Hopwood explains:

Such punishment should, at a minimum, be reserved for the worst crimes committed by repeat offenders… Ross’s crime is nowhere near that category and his sentence was exceedingly excessive.

In 2017 and 2018, the Ulbricht family and Ross attempted to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court. However, the efforts were unsuccessful and currently, Ulbricht is locked in Tucson on the peninsula of the United States.

Last summer, Ulbricht spoke publicly for the first time since 2013 at the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami. On Twitter, Ulbricht also keeps the public regularly updated regarding his overall well-being. Last week, Ulbricht explained that he had finished teaching an eight-week meditation course.

“Teaching your fellow prisoners to meditate is very satisfying. Finding peace and equanimity is very valuable to us,” Ulbricht’s Twitter account said on 8 October. “We recently finished an 8 week meditation course, and I am happy to say that 4 of my students did well. They established a daily practice and sit without forgetting their breath or moving their heads Learned,” he said.

Ulbricht also has a clemency petition addressed to the President of the United States declaring that his double-life sentence “shakes conscience.” In the opening statements of the clemency petition, Ross’s mother, Lynn Ulbricht, insisted that “Ross was not treated fairly and his sentence was harsh. Justice was not served,” she adds.

Ulbricht’s clemency petition is nearing a milestone as the total number of petitions approaches 500K. At the time of writing, data from change.org shows that Ulbricht’s clemency petition is 51,014 signatures away from meeting that goal.

The petition sheds light on Ulbricht’s position and clearly shows that hundreds of thousands of people agree that his sentence was too harsh. Ulbricht has already served nine years in prison.

“My future died in court the day I was sentenced to life without parole,” Ulbricht explained in a recent blog post. The Change.org clemency petition is full of people who also add commentary to their signatures, and signatories agree that Ulbricht’s current sentence is unjust and needs to be reversed.

“Ross’ punishment is a blatant miscarriage of justice. It is serious to rob a person of their life for a nonviolent crime,” Angela Bertalot writes on the change.org clemency petition. Another person, Ethan Arquiletian, writes:

Justice must be just and it was anything but. It destroys the credibility of a just judiciary that this person has been imprisoned as he was.

The fact is, the more signatures Ulbricht’s petition receives, the more it shows that most people are fed up with harsh prison sentences like Ulbricht’s. Many individuals are spending years behind bars for possession of a plant and society is increasingly realizing that the war on drugs was and still is a complete waste of time.

Ulbricht’s case also shows that the old punishment of cageying every criminal, no matter what the crime, is not working and society needs to change this trend.
