Wanindu Hasaranga and Nisanka’s half-centuries, Sri Lanka reach Super 12 after winning by 70 runs

Sri Lanka thrashed Ireland by 70 runs in a Group A match of the first round of the T20 World Cup here on Wednesday as Sri Lanka thrashed Ireland by 70 runs and won the Super Qualified for 12.

Sri Lanka, recovering from a poor start, posted a challenging total of 171 for seven with a 123-run fourth wicket stand between Wanindu Hasaranga and Nisanka. Apart from these two, captain Dasun Shanaka contributed an unbeaten 21 runs in 11 balls with two fours and a six. Then brilliant performances from their bowlers bundled out Ireland for 101 runs in 18.3 overs, losing wickets at frequent intervals.

For Ireland, captain Andy Balbirnie (41) and Curtis Camper (24) were only able to play for a while. For him, 53 runs were made for the fourth wicket between these two in the name of partnership.

Wickets kept falling after Camphor was dismissed in the 13th over. Apart from these two, no other batsman could reach the double score. Ireland lost the last six wickets within 16 runs in 5.5 overs. For Sri Lanka, Mahish Thikshana took three wickets for 17 runs. Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara took two wickets each.

Dushmanta Chamira and Wanindu Hasaranga got a wicket each. Ireland will need to register a win in their third match against Namibia if they want to secure their place in the Super 12.

Earlier, Wanindu Hasaranga faced 47 balls during his half-century innings, which included 10 fours and a six. Opener Nisanka was dismissed in the 19th over, hitting six fours and a six in 47 balls. Ireland’s Josh Little was the most successful bowler, taking four for 23 in four overs, while Mark Adair got two and Paul Stirling got one.

Sri Lanka did not start well, losing three wickets for eight runs. Paul Stirling dismissed Kusal Perera in the second ball of the innings, who could not even open the account. Josh Little gave him a double blow in the second over.

After bowling Dinesh Chandimal (06) on the third ball, he bowled Avishka Fernando on the next ball. But after this Nisanka and Wanindu Hasaranga played responsibly and played a brilliant partnership of 123 runs in 82 balls for the fourth wicket and took their team to a good score.

This century partnership ended in the 16th over by Mark Adair, who dismissed Wanindu Hasaranga, whose slow ball was caught by Craig Young at backward point. Little then took the wicket of Nisanka after Bhanuka Rajapaksa (01) in his second spell. Adair took his second wicket in the last over in the form of Chamika Karunaratne.
